Welcome to WP Defense Lab — your weekly brief on the WordPress news that impacts your business.
This week, Google expanded its AI Search link surfaces with five new features while declining to provide publishers with click data to evaluate them. Plus - actionable tips for how to greatly increase your email deliverability to up to 90%.
In WP Radar: the WP Engine discovery fight reaches a critical deadline, creator media companies show why personal talent does not scale into operational discipline, and the NYT posts a second straight quarter of outsized digital ad revenue growth.
Voice dictation that doesn't mangle your syntax.
Most dictation tools choke on technical language. Wispr Flow doesn't. It understands code syntax, framework names, and developer jargon — so you can dictate directly into your IDE and send without fixing.
Use it everywhere: Cursor, VS Code, Warp, Slack, Linear, Notion, your browser. Flow sits at the system level, so there's nothing to install per app. Tap and talk.
Developers use Flow to write documentation 4x faster, give coding agents richer context, and respond to Slack without breaking focus. 89% of messages go out with zero edits. Free on Mac, Windows, and iPhone.

Google Added Five New Links. It Still Has No Traffic Data For Publishers.
Four phases of AI Search explanation from Google. Zero new reporting for publishers. The links are visible. The clicks are not.
Google's AI Search features have generated four distinct phases of public explanation since launching in May 2024. Each phase changed the language. None changed the reporting available to publishers.
No Data to Share
When AI Overviews launched, click-through rates dropped immediately.
Pew Research Center tracked 68,000 queries and found users clicked 8% of the time with AI Overviews present, versus 15% without.
Only 1% clicked a link inside the AI Overview itself. Google's response: clicks were "more highly qualified," but the company had "no data to share."
Quality Over Quantity
By late 2025, independent data made silence harder.
DMG Media reported that click-through rates dropped up to 89% for certain queries with AI Overviews.
An Ahrefs analysis of 300,000 keywords measured a 58% lower click-through rate for top-ranking pages when AI Overviews appeared. Google's updated position: the remaining clicks were worth more.
No data supported that claim either.
Blame the Bounce
Google VP of Search Liz Reid coined the term "bounce clicks" to explain the loss.
The argument: AI Overviews replaced low-value visits that users abandoned immediately. A randomized field experiment tested this directly.
Removing AI Overviews from a subset of queries raised organic clicks 38%, with no measurable change in user satisfaction.
Five New Links, Zero New Reporting
This week, Google announced five link features across its AI Search products.
Inline links now appear beside the text they support instead of clustering at the bottom. A new "Explore new angles" section suggests related articles at the end of AI responses.
Subscription labels mark links from publications a user already pays for, but publishers must submit an integration form to qualify.
Search Console Shows Nothing New
Search Console still does not separate clicks from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and traditional search.
Alphabet reported Search revenue of $60.4 billion in Q1, up 19%. Network revenue, which includes AdSense, fell 4% to $6.97 billion. Publishers cannot measure whether subscription labels drive incremental clicks, or whether inline link positioning changes behavior.
The subscription label creates a new platform dependency.
Google now sits between your subscribers and their paid content in search results. Publishers get a potential visibility signal in exchange for an integration they cannot audit or A/B test.
What is your content's current click surface in Google's AI responses, and do you have any way to tell if it changed this week?
Works inside Cursor, Warp, VS Code, and every IDE.
Wispr Flow sits at the system level — dictate into any editor, terminal, or app with full syntax accuracy. No plugins needed. No setup per tool. 89% of messages sent with zero edits.

This week in WP Radar: the WP Engine discovery battle reaches a critical deadline, creator-founded media companies show why personal talent does not scale, the NYT posts its second straight quarter of outsized digital ad growth, and a creator attorney catalogs the contract traps brands set by default.
WP Engine Targets Mullenweg Entities Over Discovery Delay. WP Engine filed a joint discovery letter accusing Mullenweg's Audrey entities of producing zero documents across seven months of active subpoenas. The dispute centers on files belonging to former WordPress.org contributor Samuel 'Otto' Wood. Fact discovery closes imminently. For operators who depend on the WordPress platform's stability, a governance dispute at this level introduces structural uncertainty that release planning and plugin compatibility windows cannot hedge against.
Alex Cooper and MrBeast Show Creator Company Limits. Unwell Network, Alex Cooper's media company, faces high employee turnover from an 'allegedly dramatic and frenzied work environment.' Beast Industries is contending with a sexual harassment lawsuit. Three media industry sources told Digiday that individual creator talent does not transfer into operational discipline. Creators who built equity in consumer brands - Logan Paul, KSI, the Nelk Boys - fared better than those who structured companies around their own persona.
NYT Grew Digital Ad Revenue 31.6% With Portfolio Strategy. The New York Times reported $93.3 million in digital advertising revenue for Q1 2026, up 31.6% year-over-year - its second straight quarter of outsized growth. Total Q1 revenue reached $712.2 million with 310,000 net new digital subscribers. Chief advertising officer Joy Robins credited an expanding portfolio of lifestyle properties and deliberate ad supply buildout across surfaces that previously carried none. Publishers who survived programmatic pressure built multi-property bundles. Single-property ad businesses did not.
Creators Keep Signing Away IP in Standard Brand Deals. A creator-side attorney cataloged the most frequent legal mistakes in brand partnerships: signing IP ownership to brands by default, accepting net-60 payment terms without pushback, and agreeing to perpetual non-competes buried in campaign agreements. Every content piece created in a brand deal is an asset. Standard brand contracts routinely claim those assets unless a creator explicitly negotiates for ownership retention. The clause exists in nearly every first draft. Most creators do not read for it.

A 300,000-subscriber email list climbed from sub-40% inbox placement to above 90% after rebuilding the welcome sequence around replies, surveys, and an intentional unsubscribe prompt.
Tyler Cook restructured the welcome flow into seven emails designed to generate inbox signals in the first week. Replies auto-whitelist your address in Gmail and Yahoo. The unsubscribe prompt at email six filters disengaged subscribers before they damage sender reputation.
That’s all for this week!
